While no prior courses are necessary to fulfill prerequisite level knowledge, we advise students seeking to prepare for the CWI exam to take our CWI Pre-Seminar to immerse themselves in the body of knowledge required to successfully pass the CWI exam.

Objectives This course teaches students how to:

  • Use test-taking strategies during high-stress, time-sensitive, testing environments

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the D1.1 Online Code Clinic, students will be able to:

Locate salient clauses in a time-sensitive testing environment

Use important tables and figures
Employ successful test-taking strategies, like tabbing, highlighting, and benchmarking, based on the actual structure of the code book exam

Deconstruct prompts in order to fully understand what the question is asking

D1.1 Code Clinic (Structural Welding Code – Steel)

The AWS D1.1 Online Code Clinic provides a detailed road map through AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel. Led by an experienced AWS instructor, participants will learn to quickly locate salient clauses and use important tables and figures in time-sensitive testing or working environments. This comprehensive, 4-hour course features detailed, easy-to-understand explanations as well as interactive questions, quizzes, and a final exam designed to help participants prepare for the code book certification exam.

The American Welding Society is accredited by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and is accredited to issue the IACET CEU.

Code Clinic Pre-Course

The D1.1 Code Clinic includes an exclusive online pre-course designed to help you develop successful test-taking strategies based on the actual structure of the code book exam.

You’ll learn about time management, benchmarking, highlighting, tabbing, question keywords, and other tools designed to help you quickly identify and locate the answers to test questions.

How much do I need to know before taking this course?

No previous knowledge is required. This course is designed to guide you in navigating and reading the D1.1 code in clear, easy-to-understand language and easily digestible chunks of information. Participants will learn to quickly locate important paragraphs, charts and tables, which is crucial to navigating the code in a timed testing environment and time sensitive working conditions.

Who should take this course?

The AWS D1.1 online course is ideal for persons preparing to sit for the CWI exam and have selected D1.1 for the code book portion (Part C of the CWI exam). The course is also ideal for active CWIs interested in familiarizing themselves with the D1.1 code as part of their efforts to comply with the requirements for 9-year recertification. Please visit CWI certification for more information about 9-year recertification. Of course, non-CWIs interested in enhancing their educational credentials will also benefit from this self-paced, online program.

How long do I have to complete this course?

Participants have access to the course content 24-hours a day for a period of 30 days from the date of registration. After this 30-day period, participants will have an additional 10 days to pass the practice exam. The exam can be activated before the end of the 30-day period if the participant has completed all the modules.

Does this course include a completion exam?

Yes. Upon completion of the final course module, participants are prompted to take an online exam designed to evaluate their comprehension of the subject matter. The online practice exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and must be completed within a 2-hour period. Participants who do not attain the 75% passing score may attempt to retake the exam a second time. Participants who pass the online practice exam earn an AWS Certificate of Completion and 4 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). The AWS Certificate of Completion can be downloaded and printed directly from the webpage.

Do I need to purchase any other materials?

Yes. This course is designed to be used in conjunction with the D1.1 code book. Using the code book helps participants replicate and practice the navigational strategies that are required to successfully complete the open book portion (Part C) of the CWI exam.

Do I receive Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for completing this course?

Yes. Participants who receive a score of 75% or above on the practice exam will receive an AWS Certificate of Completion and 4 Professional Development Hours (PDHs).

Can I use these Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for recertification?

Yes. Professional Development Hours (PDHs) earned through AWS online courses can be applied towards recertification, provided the PDHs are earned during the certification period. Persons who successfully complete this online course will receive 4 PDHs. Candidates who pass the AWS D1.1 endorsement exam will receive 40 PDHs. Do I receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for completing this course?

IACET Accredited - AWS LearningYes. Participants that receive a score of 75% or above on the Completion Exam will receive an AWS Certificate of Completion and 0.4 IACET Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
