The fundamental building block of matter. There are 118 known types of atoms called elements. About 50 of these combine in different ways to form most living and non living things. For example, SAE 304 stainless steel is made of the elements iron, chromium, nickel, carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur. Atoms are composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
