A new edition of the D3.6M, Underwater Welding Code was recently published and includes numerous updates. The internationally recognized code for the welding of structures underwater in both wet and dry environments was first published in 1983 and is currently in its 6th edition.
The 2017 edition includes the following changes:
- The clauses have been renumbered to align with standard AWS format. In general, the clauses have been shifted by two. For example, Qualification used to be Clause 5 and now it’s Clause 7.
- Cleaning requirements have been better defined (5.11).
- Acceptance of still-valid qualifications to previous editions of D3.6M has been incorporated (7.1.3).
- The use of ultrasonic stress relieving has been added as an option under Workmanship. Ultrasonic stress relieving is a process in which ultrasonic energy is used to impart compressive residual stress into a weld joint and base material mitigating harmful tensile stresses.
- The ultrasonic examination (UT) procedure in Clause 8, Inspection, has been updated to better align with the technique described in AWS D1.1/D1.1M, Structural Welding Code—Steel.
- Some sample forms in Annex A have been updated.
- An informative annex has been added to address the qualification of marine welding inspectors (Annex E).
