Last year, AWS launched the Educational Library, a comprehensive collection of online courses specifically designed to meet the needs of welding students and educators. Originally consisting of 7 courses and over 75 hours of educational material, this already wide-ranging series of courses just got larger. As of June 17, AWS Learning has added two new courses: Welding Fundamentals II and Metallurgy II. Both of these courses are now live and available for purchase. Like all AWS online courses, these new additions feature engaging multimedia content designed to stimulate learning. They also include interactive elements, practice problems, and quizzes that facilitate the mastery of concepts and measure content retention. And for those of you who currently hold an AWS Online Educational Library subscription, these courses are already available to you for free!

Welding Fundamentals II
The first Welding Fundamentals course provides a solid foundation of basic welding knowledge. It covers the basic science and practical application of the most commonly utilized welding processes—oxyfuel welding, SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, SAW, plasma arc cutting—and other essential topics such as welding terminology, weld design, welding safety, electrical theory, and welding quality. The new Welding Fundamentals II course picks up where the first one left off. It covers the basic science and practical application of more involved processes, including resistance welding, plasma arc welding, electron beam welding and laser beam welding, cutting, and drilling. This engaging, 7-hour course also describes the equipment, variables, safety precautions, and advantages inherent to each process in simple, easy-to-understand language and graphics.

Metallurgy II
In our initial Metallurgy course, we covered the principles needed to understand basic metallurgy, including the nature of atoms, the periodic table, chemical bonding, chemical reactivity, the atomic structure of materials, and the properties of metals. In Metallurgy II, these principles are used to further your understanding of metals and the properties that affect weldability. This 6-hour, multimedia course delves further into the nature of metals and the properties that affect weldability. For example, engaging discussions about heat treatments, distortion, and the heat affected zone will help welders and welding professionals recognize and avoid problems that can lead to cracking, porosity, or welds with poor properties.

Is Online Learning for You?
A common concern of individuals seeking to take their first online course is whether or not online learning is tailored to their needs as a learner. With AWS online courses, this concern can be easily put to bed. The simple truth is that the AWS Online Educational Library is learner-centric and meets the needs of many different types of learners.

Ease of Use
AWS online courses are easy to use. Navigation is placed in your hands, giving you complete control over your learning experience. At any point during a module, you can pause, advance, or rewind content in order to give yourself time to absorb the information and ensure that no concepts are missed. The courses are also narrated and coupled with animated graphics and video footage to make even complex concepts engaging and easy to comprehend. If you find that you still need assistance after completing a module, you can speak to an AWS instructor during the optional weekly question and answer teleconference.

Easy Access
The biggest concern for most students is time. With work, family, and everything that falls in between, it can be difficult to continue your education. We’ve considered this as well. AWS Learning courses feature visually-stimulating content broken up into short, digestible modules. And, since the courses can be accessed from laptops, phones, and tablets at any time, learning new concepts has never been more within reach. Together, these brief modules and 24/7 mobile access allow even time-strapped learners to advance their careers or take steps toward a new one with just 25 quick minutes a day.

Time-strapped students can use the AWS Learning Management System (LMS) to access their courses and complete assignments from any device with an internet connection.

Invaluable Tool for Instructors
Welding Fundamentals II, Metallurgy II, and the other courses in the AWS Online Educational Library can be used as an excellent supplement to live coursework. It is designed to seamlessly complement distance learning, blended learning, and flipped classroom models. The Online Library is paired with an innovative and easy-to-use Learning Management System (LMS) With just a click, instructors can easily provide assignments, assign deadlines, track student progress, and check grades. To keep students on track, educators can have automatic reminders sent out to students regarding assignments and deadlines. The LMS also streamlines communication by allowing students to easily email one another or their instructor, as well as post questions or comments on a class forum.
