"I never expected the welding to take me this far or that I would even compete."

Hello my name is Ethan Durham. I Live Southeast of Rush, Colorado. My family and I farm and ranch. I started the welding program at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs while still in High School, it was a good way to get out of high school classes and something I enjoyed and already had some experience at, but wanted to get better at, to use on the ranch. I decided to pursue a welding career in order to make enough money to buy a ranch of my own, and not have to borrow money to purchase it.

"I am 21 years old and my biggest passion in life is welding. Being involved in welding has allowed me to do some pretty amazing things."

I have been able compete in the Skills USA welding competitions since I was in high school. Now I am very close to having my associate degree in applied science from Washtenaw Community College. I have received scholarships from AWS, an internship from MRA to help build the AWS Careers in Welding trailer and now have my CWI endorsement. I am also lucky enough to be going through the pre-trial process for the second time. All of this is to help with my goal to become a welding educator.

"A small town boy offered the opportunity to complete in World Skills. It is such an honor to be a participant in this spectacular and honorable organization."

Living in a small northern NH town of Gorham, I attended the local high school that was part of a Regional Center in Berlin, about 20 minutes away. One of the options at this Career & Technical Education Program at Berlin High School was the 2-year Welding Program. I had an interest in welding beginning in my sophomore year when my stepfather, who was a welder for a while, showed me a few tricks of the trade. This experience peaked my interest and combined with encouragement from community members, it was inevitable that welding would be my career choice. Following a tour of Berlin High School's welding shop, I applied to the program. With only four positions available to Gorham students, I was fortune to be chosen.

As the State Welding Champion, my instructor assisted me in perfecting my skills to compete among the best at the National Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. It was the most amazing experience and one that will be a highlight of my life. Shortly after returning from Kansas City, I received a letter inviting me to compete in the world trials; that was more than I could have ever expected.

"This experience has been an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I would never take for granted. "

I began my vocational training at Blackstone Valley Tech in Upton, MA in 2006. Beginning the first day in shop of my junior year, I was ready to work toward the goal of competing in SkillsUSA. That year I placed 21st at Nationals. This was the first time in 36 years that Blackstone Valley Tech had ever been represented in the Welding competition at the Nationals. The following year, my senior year, after a 1st place finish at Districts and States, I placed 4th in the Nationals, and 1st in the pipe welding competition. Throughout this experience, I learned a lot about welding, about the stress level in competition and, more importantly, a lot about myself and how much more I still needed to learn!

"My goal now is to represent the state of Georgia with professionalism and compete to the best of my ability, and hope that I may be the United States representative at the International Skills Competition in Germany next summer."

My name is Drew Swafford, I am 19 years old and from Cedartown, Georgia. I knew welding was what I wanted as a career watching my father weld on old cars our family restores as a hobby. I started classes when I was in the 10th grade and was dully enrolled at Georgia Northwestern Technical College both my junior and senior years in High School. I have been involved with Skills USA since the 10th grade, serving as Treasurer my junior year and President my senior year in high school. I now work full time with Polk County Public Services as a welder and am enrolled fulltime as a night student at Georgia Northwestern Technical College in both the welding and machine shop programs. I love to hunt and fish, ride 4-wheelers, basically anything outdoors and am an active member of Wimberly Hill Baptist Church where I serve as a junior usher.

"It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication to be in this position. It has also given me the reward of an advance skill in welding, and an opportunity to have friends around the country."

Traveling around the country learning new welding techniques and meeting industry leaders is something I never imagined I would have a chance to do. No matter the outcome in Daytona, I have learned a lot, met a many new people, and enjoyed everything that I have experienced. I can now share my knowledge, and help the next generation of student welders to strive to be the best, which is what I believe is a big part in this whole process. There are too many people to mention that have influenced, and helped me throughout my college career. Stan, Leland, Lynn, and Tim, my EWC welding instructors, my parents, Marc and Julie Tipsword, and many other close friends and family that have supported and pushed me to be the best I can be, I thank you all.
