A surface variation in which surfacing material is deposited to reduce wear caused by factors such as impact, erosion, galling, and cavitation. It is used to control abrasive wear on mill hammers, extrusion screws, cutting sheers, earthmoving equipment, ball mills, and crusher parts. It is also used to control wear of metal-to-metal sliding contacts such as control valves and high-performance bearings. See also Surfacing, Buildup, Buttering, and Cladding.
