This conference is designed to provide a basic understanding of aluminum welding and will include the following topics:

  • Aluminum welded applications and why we are seeing a continued increase of aluminum being used in industry
  • An overview of the aluminum alloy identification system
  • Basic aluminum metallurgy – how aluminum is strengthened (alloying, strain hardening, heat treatment) and the effect of welding on aluminum base metals
  • Metal Preparation and Storage – aluminum oxide, humidity, and pre-weld cleaning
  • The welding processes commonly used to weld aluminum – GMAW & GTAW
  • Weld discontinuities – porosity, incomplete fusion, and hot cracking
  • Filler metal selection for aluminum welding
  • AWS D1.2 Structural Welding Code – Aluminum – welding procedures, welder performance, and inspection

The presentation will go over the physical phenomena and effects present in aluminum applications. Specifically, I will be focusing on strengthening mechanisms in aluminum, methods of strength gain and loss in aluminum, and the effects of arc welding on the strength of aluminum. My hope is that viewers will leave with a better understanding of the physical bases of what affects aluminum performance, particularly in arc welding environments.

Application Engineer, Lincoln Electric

Elliott Ash began his professional career at Lincoln Electric back in 2007 after graduating from The Ohio State University with a degree in Welding Engineering. He worked as a waveform developer on advanced process machines for several years prior to becoming the Product manager of Aluminum Process Solutions in 2013. He was in charge of the machine and consumable product line for all aluminum products. He is now working as an Application Engineer supporting customers with their welding applications on a global scale.

Patrick BerubePatrick Berube
Application Engineering Product Manager, Wire, Rod and Bar, Arconic

Patrick Berube is Application Engineering Product Manager for Arconic’s Wire, Rod & Bar division (FKA Alcoa Engineered Products), with current focus on the development of new processes and products for the industrial, automotive and aerospace markets. A metallurgical engineer by training, Mr. Berube has a background of two decades in aluminum extrusions, aluminum fabricating and aluminum arc welding that includes various roles in metallurgy/process/applications engineering, quality/operations/product management, customer support and marketing. Mr. Berube is vice-chair to the AWS A5C committee (Welding Consumables–Wire Electrodes, Wires and Rods for Welding of Aluminum and Aluminum-Alloys-classification).

After working in various offices in Lincoln Electric Canada, Raheel started with the Aluminum Solutions Division. His current responsibilities are managing and growing aluminum alloy products and applications globally.

Sean Morton is a graduate of Northern College in Kirkland Lake. He has spent a few years running a materials testing lab in Northern Ontario and is now a Welding Engineering Technologist with Lincoln Electric.

Thomas has been an employee of AlcoTec Wire Corp. for the past ten years. This time was primarily spent traveling both domestically and abroad to support customer and solve aluminum welding related problems. He is currently serving on the AWS D1.2 Subcommittee.

Galen White is the Senior Welding Engineer/Product Specialist at Hobart Aluminum Filler Metals. He provides technical support for the aluminum filler metal products and is currently serving on several AWS subcommittees including AWS D1.2 (Structural Aluminum), AWS A5.10 (Aluminum Filler Metal Specification), and AWS D3.7 (Aluminum Hull). He is a graduate of Ferris State University with a B.S. degree in Welding Engineering Technology, has several welding related patents and is an AWS CWI/CWE/CRI.

I am the Aluminum Technical Product Manager for Hobart Brothers, based in Traverse City, Michigan, and have held this role for a little over a year. I grew up in Grand Ledge, MI, northwest of Lansing, and attended Michigan Technological University, where I received my BS and MS degrees in Materials Science & Engineering. My graduate studies focused on aluminum metallurgy, and I have developed a passion for aluminum that drives the work that I do and hope to accomplish. In my spare time, I am a big fan of the outdoors, cooking, and music.
