The Role of Oxygen in Arc Stabilization of Aluminum GMA Welds

Jesse Martinez, on behalf of his colleagues (Dr. P. Burhardt, Dr. C.E. Cross, and A.N. Duffield) at Los Alamos National Laboratory, discusses the results of an experiment that explored the relationship between oxygen and welding arc stability. This experiment was conducted in response to issues the research team encountered with GMA welds on aluminum in low-oxygen environments. This presentation includes supplementary charts, graphs, and photos that serve to illustrate the effects of controlled oxygen additions on metal transfer mode transition and overall arc stability.
